If you’re a writer or any kind of creator, I recommend opening your creative space to a fellow-creature. I discovered the wisdom in this unexpectedly when I began writing morning pages as a daily ritual to connect with myself, to ground my creative intentions and to use the words “poopy pants” if I felt like it.

I’d just adopted a kitten, and curious, she followed me to the kitchen where I would set the water for boil so that I could make a cup of coffee as I wrote my pages. As the water boiled, I’d give her treats. I had no idea I was training an accountability cat.

These days I no longer need an alarm clock to remind me to write my morning pages. My accountability cat makes sure I’m out of bed at the exact minute I should be, coaxing me down the hall to the kitchen with her mews where, yes, I still give her treats.

She has also told her other animal-friends about this (I have another cat and a big white dog.) They all follow me into the kitchen on these early mornings. I feel a bit like Snow White, but I am grateful for this animal tribe that keeps me accountable.
